Slovenia defeated Montenegro 41–40 in Bærum in a match that set a European Championship record for combined goals. The eighty-one-goal total surpassed the previous mark of seventy-seven from Belarus’s 39–38 victory over Iceland in 2016 and gave Slovenia the first group D points.
Slovenia led 19–18 at half-time, but Montenegro moved ahead early in the second period. Branko Vujović’s long-range shooting helped sustain the challenge, and the teams were tied 37–37 with five minutes remaining.
Two successive Slovenian goals provided the decisive advantage, with Borut Mačkovšek scoring their final goal. Domen Novak and Domen Makuc contributed nine each, while Vujović scored eleven for Montenegro and was named player of the match.
