Nielsen’s saves lead Denmark to a second main-round victory
Spain and Denmark finished 31–36 in Herning.
Source publication date:
Denmark defeated Spain 36–31 in Herning to record a second consecutive European Championship main-round victory. The result strengthened the co-hosts’ position while Spain remained without a point, leaving their prospects of reaching the final weekend dependent on results elsewhere.
Denmark led 16–14 at half-time behind Emil Nielsen’s saves and Simon Pytlick’s scoring. Spain equalised four minutes after the restart, but Denmark answered with five successive goals as Nielsen repeatedly denied Spanish attempts and Emil Jakobsen converted fast breaks.
The Danish advantage reached eight goals before Spain reduced the final margin. Jakobsen scored eight from nine attempts, while Marcos Fis led Spain with nine. Nielsen finished with fourteen saves and received the match award in front of a sold-out arena.
