Portugal defeated Spain 35–27 in their final European Championship main-round game in Herning. Their first victory over their neighbours at an EHF EURO kept Portugal in contention for the fifth-place match, with qualification dependent on results elsewhere that evening.

A six-goal unanswered run established an early 9–4 lead, and Portugal reached half-time ahead 16–12. Martim and Francisco Costa supplied ten of those first-half goals, while goalkeeper Diogo Valério supported the advantage with important saves.

Spain improved their attacking efficiency after the interval but could not close the gap. Victor Iturriza’s successive goals helped settle the result; Francisco Costa finished with seven and Martim received the player-of-the-match award.
