Sweden opened their European Championship campaign with a 36–31 victory over the Netherlands in Malmö. The co-hosts withstood a quick Dutch start before taking control at key moments, collecting their first two points in group E in front of 11,800 supporters.
Felix Claar and Eric Johansson supplied much of Sweden’s early scoring. Luc Steins received a direct red card in the twenty-sixth minute, and Sweden used the disruption to establish a 16–12 lead at half-time.
The gap stayed between four and six goals through the second half. Claar scored eight from nine attempts and was named player of the match; Dutch wing Rutger ten Velde finished with nine goals despite the defeat.
