Source publication date:
Sweden defeated Switzerland 34–21 in their final European Championship main-round match in Malmö. The co-hosts had already lost their semi-final opportunity, but finished their home appearances with a victory before travelling to Herning for the fifth-place match against Portugal.
Switzerland led for much of the first half before Sweden scored six unanswered goals, reaching the interval ahead 14–12. A further Swiss scoring drought after the break allowed Sweden to extend their lead to 22–14 and take firm control.
Andreas Palicka made twenty saves at a fifty per cent success rate and received the match award. Eric Johansson scored seven for Sweden, while Switzerland finished twelfth, equalling their previous best European Championship placing from 2004.
