FIDE allocates €37,000 to chess veterans
Seventeen players, coaches and organisers were selected for the federation’s annual support programme.
Source publication date:
FIDE selected seventeen chess veterans to receive a combined €37,000 through its 2026 support programme. A panel appointed by the federation’s council reviewed the applications before choosing beneficiaries from among former players, coaches and organisers across multiple national federations.
Recipients include grandmasters Leonid Yudasin, Florin Gheorghiu and Yehuda Gruenfeld, women’s grandmaster Irina Levitina and international arbiter Boris Postovsky. The federation published the full list alongside career profiles explaining recipients’ contributions to competitive chess, coaching and the organisation of events.
The programme began twelve years earlier and has distributed nearly €500,000 since its introduction. This year’s allocation continues the annual assistance scheme and recognises work extending beyond current elite competition, including long careers in national teams, player development and chess administration.
