The FIH issued a statement placing athlete safety at the centre of preparations for the forthcoming World Cup qualifiers. The announcement came as international teams travelled to tournament venues during a period of renewed geopolitical tension affecting the wider global environment.

Qualifying events were due to begin the following day in Santiago, Chile, and Ismailia, Egypt, with the Hyderabad tournament in India to follow. The federation said it was monitoring developments closely and remained in contact with relevant stakeholders.

President Tayyab Ikram identified the safety of athletes, officials and everyone involved as the first priority. The statement reaffirmed the federation’s expectation that the competitions could bring people together, while setting out its immediate approach to oversight before matches began.
