Franzoni earns first World Cup win in Wengen super-G
Babinsky also achieved a first podium as von Allmen placed third.
Source publication date:
Giovanni Franzoni won the men’s super-G in Wengen in 1:45.19, taking his first World Cup victory on his sixtieth start. The Italian wore bib one and set a time none of the later competitors could match.
Stefan Babinsky finished second, 0.35 seconds behind, to earn his first World Cup podium on his ninety-fourth start. Franjo von Allmen took third, two hundredths behind Babinsky, while Marco Odermatt placed fourth after a costly early error.
Franzoni negotiated the narrow Kernen-S and closing Ziel-S sections effectively, completing a breakthrough at a venue where he had suffered a hamstring injury three years earlier. He dedicated the victory to former teammate Matteo Franzoso, who died in a training crash in September.
