Gauff beats Muchova for third straight Melbourne quarterfinal
A decisive third-set serving improvement carried the American through.
Source publication date:
Coco Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova 6–1, 3–6, 6–3 to reach the Australian Open quarterfinals for a third consecutive year. The third seed won the opening set in thirty minutes before Muchova’s variety and improved ball speed forced a deciding set.
Gauff responded by landing more first serves and maintaining composure. She said that trusting her shots, including her second serve, helped her finish on her own delivery and avoid becoming too passive during important moments against the experienced nineteenth-seeded Czech.
The victory improved Gauff’s record in deciding-set major matches to twenty-one wins and six defeats. At twenty-one, she became the youngest woman to make three consecutive Melbourne singles quarterfinals since Maria Sharapova’s sequence from 2005 to 2008, reinforcing her consistency at the tournament.
