Gemetto breaks Italy’s indoor 5000m record in Lyon
A 16:00.45 performance removed a national mark dating from 1996.

Valentina Gemetto set an Italian indoor 5000-metre record of 16:00.45 in Lyon. The Caivano Runners athlete improved Claudia Menconi’s recognised national mark of 16:47.04, recorded in Stockholm in 1996.
Gemetto finished sixth in a race won by Sarah Madeleine in 15:03.76. The national record and the race victory therefore belonged to different athletes. FIDAL noted that an earlier faster performance by Silvia Del Fava had not been recognised because she was not registered with the federation.
Gemetto entered the season as Italy’s reigning 10-kilometre champion and a European road team gold medallist. Her outdoor 5000-metre best stood at 15:25.30, underlining that the January record applied specifically to indoor competition.
