Lars Heggen won the men’s freestyle sprint in Oberhof for his first World Cup victory. The twenty-year-old Norwegian beat Federico Pellegrino by 0.32 seconds in the final, adding a top-step result to an impressive debut season on the circuit.

Heggen had needed a qualifying time from his semifinal after running wide at the last corner. In the final, he responded to Valerio Grond’s attempted breakaway and reached the finishing straight in a strong position, resisting Pellegrino’s challenge.

The victory came three days after Heggen won Norway’s national sprint title. Several established World Cup contenders were absent, including Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo, but the young skier still had to navigate an icy course with narrow sections and two demanding climbs.
