Hifumi Abe won his fourteenth Grand Slam gold medal by defeating Shinsei Hattori in an all-Japanese under-66kg final in Tashkent. The double Olympic and four-time world champion ended the contest with a powerful hip technique after a brief opening exchange.
Hattori had reached the final through a strong preliminary campaign, including a semifinal victory over top seed Nurali Emomali. Abe advanced with controlled performances throughout the day, with his final opponent unable to establish a sustained challenge before the decisive throw.
Emomali recovered to earn bronze against Valerio Accogli in a long contest. Both had scored yuko during regulation time before the Tajik athlete found the winning o-soto-gari in golden score. Abdullakh Parchiev claimed the other bronze against Channyeong Kim with a counter for ippon.
