India and England began the women's World Cup qualifier in Hyderabad with clear victories. India beat Uruguay 4–0, while England defeated Italy 5–2, establishing strong starts in the two pools at GMC Balayogi Hockey Ground.
Grace Balsdon scored twice from penalty corners for England, with Lottie Bingham, Elizabeth Neal and Anna Toman also contributing. India broke through via Sunelita Toppo and added goals from Ishika, Lalremsiami and Rutuja Pisal while keeping Uruguay scoreless.
The other opening matches were decided by single goals. Korea beat Austria 1–0 through Seona Kim, and Scotland edged Wales by the same score after Amy Costello converted a penalty corner. The narrow results contrasted with the favourites' scoring performances as all eight teams opened their campaigns.
