Italy named 25 athletes for the World Race Walking Team Championships in Brasilia on 12 April. Technical director Antonio La Torre selected thirteen men and twelve women for a meeting introducing marathon and half-marathon distances to the international championship programme.
Olympic 20km champion Massimo Stano was selected to make his marathon-distance debut. Francesco Fortunato, the European 20km bronze medallist and recent world indoor 5,000m record setter, entered the half marathon after winning relay gold at the previous team championships.
Recent Italian champions Riccardo Orsoni, Andrea Agrusti and Sofia Fiorini also joined the squad. Under-20 athletes will continue to contest 10km, with three Italian entries in each gender. The new senior distances will also feature at the European Championships in Birmingham in August.
