Sam Kerr scored the only goal as Australia opened their Women’s Asian Cup campaign with a 1-0 win against the Philippines in Perth. The forward marked her return to the starting side following a lengthy absence with a close-range finish.
Clare Wheeler’s cross reached Caitlin Foord, who headed across for Kerr to convert early in the first half. Australia controlled possession and created further openings, but goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel and the Philippines defence kept the margin narrow.
Hayley Raso had a goal disallowed after a VAR review for offside, and further Australian chances went unconverted after the interval. The hosts nonetheless secured three points in Group A before their next fixture against Iran, while the Philippines prepared to meet Korea Republic.
