The German clubs advanced with two main-round matches remaining as Vardar ended Melsungen’s unbeaten run.
Source publication date:
THW Kiel and Flensburg-Handewitt became the first men’s European League main-round teams to secure knockout qualification. Kiel beat Bidasoa Irun 37–32 and Flensburg defeated Montpellier 40–35, guaranteeing both a top-three finish in their group with two matches remaining.
The pair were assured of at least a play-off place, although the group winner would advance directly to the quarter-finals. Their results sustained the German clubs’ influence in the competition while leaving the contest for first place unresolved.
Melsungen could not join them after losing 37–33 away to Vardar, their first defeat of the campaign. Jaka Malus scored ten and Vukašin Vorkapić added nine for the hosts. Aarhus also won the round’s Nordic derby against Elverum.
