Laredo Heat entered preparations for a seventh U.S. Open Cup campaign with a first-round home tie against El Paso Locomotive. U.S. Soccer's March profile examined how the amateur club had developed a football pathway in a Texas city beside the Mexican border.
PEG Energy Stadium, completed in 2024, provides a soccer-specific home and protection from the South Texas sun. The Vaswani family's investment also supports a tuition-free academy, giving local players a route toward the club's USL League Two first team.
Coach Johnny Ibarra had helped Laredo win the 2007 PDL championship and reach the 2014 Open Cup round of thirty-two. Seventeen-year-old academy product Asael Montoya represented the next generation hoping to build on that record against professional opposition.
