Purnima Mahato reflected on more than three decades in Indian archery in a February profile published by World Archery. The Jamshedpur coach described balancing national team travel with family life while preparing athletes for major international competitions.
Mahato joined Tata Steel as an athlete at 18 and later coached at the Tata Archery Academy. Her students have included Deepika Kumari, Ankita Bhakat and Komalika Bari. She received the Dronacharya Award in 2013 and the Padma Shri in 2024.
After India missed a mixed team bronze medal in Paris, Mahato argued that psychological preparation needs greater attention. She also welcomed the Archery Premier League’s increased visibility and continued developing junior athletes toward an Olympic medal.
