Makin wins 107-minute Zakaria rematch in Australian Open semifinal
The Welshman reversed the previous week’s New Zealand result to reach the Brisbane final.

Joel Makin defeated Mohamad Zakaria in a five-game Australian Open semifinal, reversing their marathon result in New Zealand a week earlier. He won 11–7, 9–11, 11–6, 7–11, 11–8 in a match officially recorded at 107 minutes at South Bank Piazza.
Makin took the twenty-four-minute opener before Zakaria levelled. The Welshman regained the lead in the third, but eighteen-year-old Zakaria recovered from 7–5 down in the fourth with six straight points, forcing another deciding game between the two physically demanding opponents.
The fifth remained level from 2–2 through 7–7 before Makin earned match balls. He finished after a dramatic rally involving a front-court dive and Zakaria slipping. A crowd of 1,135 watched the Brisbane contest, following the pair’s 125-minute New Zealand semifinal the previous week.
