Sinayoko’s late equaliser and Diarra’s shoot-out saves kept Mali in the tournament.
Source publication date:
Mali beat Tunisia 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals. The match at Casablanca’s Mohammed V Stadium required extra time despite Mali playing with ten men from the 27th minute.
Woyo Coulibaly’s dismissal left Mali under pressure, and Firas Chaouat eventually headed Tunisia ahead in the 88th minute. Lassine Sinayoko then converted a penalty during added time after a handball by Yassine Meriah, rescuing Mali’s tournament hopes.
Neither side found a further goal in extra time. Goalkeeper Djigui Diarra played a decisive role in the shoot-out as Mali converted three penalties against Tunisia’s two, setting up a last-eight meeting with Senegal following an extended defensive effort.
