Malta agrees swimming safety and coaching projects
Government discussions identified three initiatives for formal agreement in April.
Source publication date:
The Maltese government committed to developing swimming safety, inclusion and coach education projects with European Aquatics and the national aquatic association. The agreement in principle followed a 13 February meeting with sports and education minister Clifton Grima and federation representatives.
Three projects were proposed for formalisation in April. They cover an inclusive learn-to-swim approach for the next academic year, implementation of an aquatic coach certification programme, and cooperation on a Special Olympics swimming event scheduled in Malta for September.
The discussions brought together European Aquatics president Antonio Silva, national association president Karl Izzo and swimming vice-president David Bonello. The proposed work connects drowning prevention with practical teaching and inclusive competition, giving the partners a defined set of national development priorities for 2026.
