Melbourne City drew 1-1 with Buriram United in the first leg of their AFC Champions League Elite round-of-sixteen tie. Ben Mazzeo’s late equaliser preserved the Australian club’s hopes in their first appearance in the competition’s knockout phase.

Buriram went ahead before half-time when Guilherme Bissoli met a pass from Kingsley Schindler and struck into the top corner. Both goalkeepers were tested during the contest, with Neil Etheridge denying Samuel Souprayen and Patrick Beach saving Peter Zulj’s free-kick.

City continued searching for a reply as Buriram defended their narrow advantage. Daniel Arzani missed an opportunity and Bissoli also headed wide before Mazzeo met Marcus Younis’s delivery in the fifth minute of added time, leaving the return leg in Thailand to settle qualification.
