Mohamed ElShorbagy established the PSA Squash Tour’s modern-era record for match victories by defeating Juan Vargas at the Tournament of Champions. His 11–9, 11–7, 11–8 first-round success at Grand Central Terminal was his 588th tour win, surpassing coach Gregory Gaultier.

The thirty-five-year-old English representative used his experience in the decisive stages of each game against a determined opponent. He described sharing the top two positions with a former rival who now supported his career as a particular source of pride.

The same programme featured Diego Elias continuing his injury comeback with a straight-games victory over Dimitri Steinmann. In the women’s draw, Olivia Weaver, Amanda Sobhy and Marina Stefanoni advanced, while ElShorbagy’s next match would be against Malaysia’s Eain Yow Ng.
