Musetti completes major quarterfinal set with Fritz victory
The Italian reached Melbourne’s last eight for the first time in a commanding performance.
Source publication date:
Lorenzo Musetti defeated Taylor Fritz 6–2, 7–5, 6–4 to reach his first Australian Open quarterfinal. The fifth seed completed the contest in slightly more than two hours and joined Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as men born after 2000 with quarterfinal appearances at all four majors.
Musetti struck thirteen aces, three more than Fritz, and finished with thirteen more winners. He credited improved serving, greater forehand aggression and a more assertive mindset for his progress on hard courts, where his 2026 record improved to seven wins and one defeat.
Fritz was carrying knee and oblique concerns but praised the Italian’s performance. Musetti advanced to face Novak Djokovic, against whom he trailed 9–1, and recorded his first straight-sets hard-court victory over a top-ten opponent.
