Nele Gilis advances as injured Malik retires in New Zealand semifinal
A knee problem ended the English player’s tournament after twenty-five minutes.

Nele Gilis reached the New Zealand Open final after Torrie Malik retired with a knee injury. Gilis led 11–4, 11–7, 2–0 when the semifinal ended after twenty-five minutes, securing a place in an all-Belgian championship match against her younger sister Tinne.
Malik had hyperextended her knee during the previous day’s quarterfinal against Nour Heikal. She completed that five-game victory despite the injury, having already beaten Salma Hany in another five-game contest earlier in the tournament at Christchurch’s Isaac Theatre Royal.
The English player’s demanding run therefore ended before the semifinal could be completed. Gilis moved through with the first two games secured, while the draw produced a family final after Tinne separately defeated Marina Stefanoni in the other women’s semifinal.
