New Zealand selected a fifteen-player squad for the T20 World Cup under captain Mitchell Santner. Fast bowler Jacob Duffy earned his first World Cup opportunity after taking 81 international wickets across formats in the preceding calendar year.
The squad combined specialist pace options with several all-rounders. Ish Sodhi joined Santner in the spin department, while Michael Bracewell, Glenn Phillips and Rachin Ravindra offered further variety. Tim Seifert was selected to keep wicket and Kyle Jamieson as travelling reserve.
Coach Rob Walter emphasised experience in subcontinental conditions and a balanced combination of batting power and adaptable bowling. New Zealand was placed in Group D and scheduled to begin against Afghanistan in Chennai on 8 February.
