Nicol Delago earned her first World Cup victory in the women’s downhill in Tarvisio, finishing in 1:46.28. The thirty-year-old Italian converted the speed she had shown in the final training session into a winning performance on a foggy, wet course.
Kira Weidle-Winkelmann finished second, 0.20 seconds behind, while Lindsey Vonn took third at 0.26 seconds. Vonn reached the podium in all five downhills contested so far this season. Delago’s teammate Laura Pirovano shared sixth place.
Tarvisio was hosting its first World Cup race in fifteen years. Delago’s victory added a breakthrough to the Italian team’s preparations for the home Olympics, with her sister Nadia finishing tenth and Sofia Goggia eleventh.
