Nwabali saves two penalties as Nigeria take AFCON bronze
Nigeria beat Egypt 4-2 in the shoot-out after a goalless third-place match.
Source publication date:
Nigeria won the Africa Cup of Nations bronze medal by defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties in Casablanca. The teams went directly to a shoot-out after ninety minutes ended goalless in the third-place play-off.
Stanley Nwabali saved penalties from Mohamed Salah and Omar Marmoush after Egypt goalkeeper Ouba Shobeir had stopped Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s opening effort. Akor Adams, Moses Simon, Alex Iwobi and Ademola Lookman then converted for Nigeria.
Nigeria had two goals disallowed during the match, one following a VAR review and another for offside. Neither side found a valid breakthrough, leaving the goalkeeper’s shoot-out interventions to determine a podium finish after Nigeria’s semi-final defeat to Morocco earlier in the week.
