OFC Pro League pilots FIFA’s new concussion assessment
The competition introduced a football-specific on-field evaluation in Melbourne.
Source publication date:
The OFC Pro League became the first competition to implement FIFA’s new on-field concussion assessment protocol. FIFA medical director Andrew Massey attended the Melbourne round to supervise its introduction and gather feedback from those using it during live matches.
Developed through research led by Kerry Peek and FIFA’s medical team, the tool combines assessment elements within the existing time allowed for medical evaluation. It aims to provide a consistent football-specific approach when a player may have suffered a concussion.
The central instruction remains to remove a player whenever concussion is suspected or uncertainty persists. Feedback from medical staff, match officials and organisers will help evaluate the procedure’s practical fit, with refinement continuing before potential use at other competitions.
