Ono and Totsuka win Sapporo halfpipe from qualification scores
Heavy snow prevented finals and left Japan with a women’s podium sweep.
Source publication date:
Mitsuki Ono and Yuto Totsuka won the Sapporo snowboard halfpipe World Cup after heavy snowfall forced officials to cancel the finals. Sticky conditions at the Ban-K pipe prevented the twenty-three scheduled finalists from competing, so the completed Friday qualification scores established the final classifications.
Totsuka won the men’s event with 91.50 points, ahead of Australia’s Valentino Guseli on 89 and Japan’s Ryusei Yamada on 85.50. It was his tenth career halfpipe World Cup victory, making him the second rider to reach that total after Scotty James.
Ono led a Japanese women’s sweep with 87 points. Sena Tomita took second on 78.50 and Sara Shimizu third with 78. Both winners earned their second World Cup victories of the season before the final stop in Silvaplana.
