Osaka withdrawal sends Inglis into fourth round
The Australian qualifier reached a major last sixteen for the first time.
Source publication date:
Naomi Osaka withdrew from the Australian Open shortly before her scheduled third-round match with Maddison Inglis. The two-time Melbourne champion said a physical issue required attention following her previous match, giving the Australian qualifier passage into the fourth round.
Inglis was appearing in her first major main draw in four years and had already accumulated thirteen hours and twenty-four minutes of play across fourteen sets. The withdrawal spared her another demanding contest and secured her first Grand Slam round-of-sixteen appearance.
At that stage, Inglis and Alex de Minaur were the only Australians remaining in the singles competitions. She was guaranteed 480,000 Australian dollars for reaching the fourth round and would next face the winner of Iga Swiatek’s match against Anna Kalinskaya.
