Alex Ovechkin reached a combined thousand NHL goals with his latest strike against Colorado, the IIHF reported in March. The Washington Capitals forward became the second player to reach that total across regular season and playoff competition, following Wayne Gretzky.

The federation listed Ovechkin's record as 923 regular season goals and 77 in the playoffs. His milestone goal was his twenty-sixth of the season, adding another landmark to a career already prominent in the NHL scoring record book.

The report placed the milestone within hockey's international history. Gretzky's career also included WHA hockey, while Jaromír Jágr played in North America and Europe. Those cross-border careers provided a wider context for Ovechkin's achievement in the NHL.
