The World Schools Team Championship will use four continental qualifying stages followed by a four-team Grand Final in 2026. FIDE and the International School Chess Federation announced the structure as part of their joint Year of Chess in Education programme.

Each champion school team from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe advances directly to the December final. The cycle starts with the Asian stage in Almaty in April. Only teams drawn from a single general educational institution are eligible to compete.

Players must have been born between 2012 and 2018. Teams must include a boy and a girl, with exceptions possible for single-gender schools. The regulations provide organiser assistance to participating teams, while national and continental bodies help connect the school competitions to the global championship.
