Sinner advances as Gaston retires after two sets
The defending champion began his Melbourne title defence with an abbreviated match.
Source publication date:
Jannik Sinner advanced through the Australian Open first round after Hugo Gaston retired with the Italian leading 6–2, 6–1. The French left-hander ended the match after sixty-eight minutes at Rod Laver Arena, having appeared to receive medication after the opening set.
Sinner saved three break points in the first game with the help of strong serving, then took control through aggressive baseline play and effective passing shots. Gaston generated no further break opportunities as the favourite repeatedly pressured his service games throughout the contest.
The result gave Sinner fifteen consecutive victories in Melbourne and extended his sequence without dropping a set to eleven matches. It was his first competitive appearance since winning the previous season’s ATP Finals, and he said his preparation had left him feeling ready for the campaign.
