Sivasangari beats Nele Gilis in tight Australian Open semifinal
The Malaysian won in straight games after a crucial second-game tiebreak.
Source publication date:
Sivasangari Subramaniam reached the Australian Open final by defeating Nele Gilis 11–8, 13–11, 11–4. The world number six needed fifty minutes at South Bank Piazza, with two closely contested opening games making the straight-games semifinal result harder than the score suggested.
The first game lasted seventeen minutes before two late Gilis errors helped Sivasangari take the lead. In a twenty-three-minute second, Gilis recovered from 6–2 down to reach game ball at 10–9. Sivasangari held on through the tiebreak to double her advantage.
The top seed built a 7–2 lead in the third with effective shot combinations and finished the contest quickly from there. She described fighting through the second-game pressure and welcomed reaching the final after a quarterfinal exit at the previous year’s Australian Open.
