Stellenbosch University’s Maties Esport programme won the inaugural South African Varsity Esport tournament. FISU’s February feature described how teams across several game titles combined to secure the overall university championship after years of development and investment.

The competition included Rocket League, Valorant and EA FC 25. Stellenbosch’s leading Rocket League team produced consistent results, while its second squad reached third place. Two university Valorant teams finished in the top four, with the leading side winning that title.

Sport manager Yaseen Gangat linked the success to structured trials, coaching, analyst support and improved governance. The feature placed the esports achievement alongside Stellenbosch’s broader university-sport programme, including its planned hosting of the 2026 World University Rugby Sevens Championship.
