Sundowns withstand Stade Malien’s return-leg surge
A 2-0 defeat in Bamako still left Sundowns ahead on aggregate.
Source publication date:
Mamelodi Sundowns progressed to the CAF Champions League semi-finals despite losing 2-0 to Stade Malien in Bamako. Their three-goal first-leg advantage proved sufficient for a 3-2 aggregate win, although the South African side finished the return with ten players.
Taddeus Nkeng headed Stade Malien into the lead inside the opening minute after VAR confirmed the goal. Haman Mandjan added the second before half-time, leaving the home side one further goal away from forcing extra time.
Sundowns regained some control after the break but had an Iqraam Rayners effort ruled out for offside. Aubrey Modiba’s late red card increased the pressure, yet goalkeeper Ronwen Williams and the visiting defence resisted the final attacks to preserve their aggregate lead.
