The Masters field is the youngest in the tournament’s history.
Source publication date:
The eighty-eighth Tata Steel Chess Tournament officially opened at De Moriaan in Wijk aan Zee on January 17. A protest delayed the start, but the ceremony marked the beginning of another edition of the long-running Dutch event.
Twenty-eight players were divided equally between the Masters and Challengers sections. The Masters group had an average age of twenty-three, making it the youngest field in the tournament’s history and placing emerging players alongside established international competitors.
Tata Steel Nederland chief executive Hans van den Berg and tournament director Jeroen van den Berg inaugurated the competition. The event traces its origins to a company tournament in 1938, and its contemporary format continues to provide two levels of international round-robin play.
