Learner Tien defeated Daniil Medvedev 6–4, 6–0, 6–3 to reach his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. The American became the youngest Australian Open men’s quarterfinalist since Nick Kyrgios in 2015 and earned a meeting with previous-year finalist Alexander Zverev.
Tien broke immediately and combined controlled baseline exchanges, sharp angles and disguised drop shots to dominate. He committed sixteen unforced errors against Medvedev’s thirty, hit eighteen more winners and converted seventy per cent of his opportunities to break serve during the encounter.
The twenty-year-old won eleven consecutive games from late in the opening set to 4–0 in the third. Medvedev had arrived unbeaten in 2026 after winning Brisbane. Tien now led their meetings 3–1, including another Melbourne victory a year earlier.
