Paolo Tonon reclaimed the men’s W1 indoor world record with a score of 589 at eighteen metres, subject to ratification. The Italian produced the mark in qualification at the national indoor Para archery championships in Lamezia Terme.
The score exceeded Jason Tabansky’s previous record of 587 by two points. Tonon, a Paralympic bronze medallist, had previously held the record with 582. His new qualifying round contained fifty tens across sixty arrows for Gruppo Sportivo Paralimpico Difesa.
The thirty-six-year-old later lost the gold-medal match to Maurizio Panella by 147 to 146. Despite that narrow defeat, Tonon said focused preparation for the national event and improved final weeks of training had helped him reproduce his best shooting in competition.
