Tougai penalty gives Esperance a first-leg win
Esperance defeated Al Ahly 1-0 in Rades before the Cairo return.
Source publication date:
Esperance took a 1-0 lead over Al Ahly in their CAF Champions League quarter-final after Mohamed Amine Tougai converted a second-half penalty. The result at Hamadi Agrebi Stadium in Rades ended Esperance’s eight-match scoring drought against the Egyptian club.
Both goalkeepers were important during a cautious contest. Mostafa Shobeir denied Florian Danho early, while Bechir Ben Said kept out a Trezeguet effort and later dealt with increased Al Ahly pressure following the interval.
A handball by Mohamed Hany led to the decisive penalty after a review, with Tougai scoring in the seventy-third minute. Esperance then defended their advantage through added time, although further chances for Jan Sass and Youssef Msakni might have enlarged the lead before the return in Cairo.
