Tutumanu Piuiki Matautia outlines stronger pathways for Samoan girls
The Samoa Hockey Federation secretary discussed facilities, mentoring and women's leadership.
Source publication date:
Samoa Hockey Federation secretary Tutumanu Piuiki Matautia described the sporting pathways she wants to strengthen for girls across Samoa and the Pacific. An FIH profile traced her involvement from an unexpected childhood appearance in a match to national representation and administration.
Matautia also served as secretary of the Oceania National Olympic Committee's athletes' commission and competed in several other sports. She identified inconsistent facilities, limited grassroots structures, few female leadership mentors and insufficient media visibility as continuing barriers.
Her proposed Girls in Sport Leadership and Development Programme would combine athletic training with education, leadership and mentorship. She argued that equal access, preparation funding and women's participation in governance should accompany opportunities to play, reflecting the practical demands of a smaller national sporting system.
