Uchendu’s late strike sends Melbourne City through
The substitute decided a tight quarter-final against Nasaf with a 2-1 win.
Source publication date:
Melbourne City reached the AFC Women’s Champions League semi-finals after Chinaza Uchendu scored a spectacular late winner against Nasaf. The 2-1 victory kept last season’s runners-up in contention and set up a meeting with Tokyo Verdy Beleza.
Holly McNamara gave City the lead by heading in a rebound before Zarina Mamatkarimova quickly equalised. Nasaf’s organised defence and goalkeeper Maftuna Jonimqulova then frustrated further attempts, keeping the contest level through much of the second half.
Aideen Keane struck the crossbar as City searched for a winner. Uchendu came on in the eighty-second minute and decided the match near the end of normal time, flicking the ball over her head before driving a powerful shot past Jonimqulova.
