Updated chess tiebreak rules add Standard Points
FIDE outlined changes affecting alternative scoring, unplayed games and team competitions.
Source publication date:
FIDE reminded tournament officials and software providers that updated play-off and tiebreak regulations entered force on 1 March. The revised C.07 text covers competitions using different scoring systems and provides additional methods for separating players at the end of a tournament.
A new Standard Points mechanism allows the conventional one, half and zero framework to be applied when an event awards points differently. Additional tiebreak options are intended to reduce situations in which final standings must be settled by drawing lots.
The revision clarifies Buchholz and adds provisions for team knockout competitions. It also changes how unplayed games enter Buchholz and Sonneborn-Berger calculations, alongside refinements for Rating-Based and Type B tiebreaks in events with unplayed rounds.
