Welsford delivers first INEOS win in Nairne
The Australian sprinter earned his seventh Tour Down Under stage victory.
Source publication date:
Sam Welsford won the third road stage of the Tour Down Under in Nairne, securing his first victory for INEOS Grenadiers. The result added to the six stage wins he collected at the Australian race during his previous two seasons.
Welsford described the success as particularly meaningful after a difficult year affected by injuries. His new team helped him finish the job on a day that had begun at Henley Beach and offered a late chance for the leading sprinters.
Jay Vine retained the ochre jersey, six seconds ahead of UAE teammate Jhonatan Narvaez. The breakaway’s Martin Urianstad Bugge added mountains points, while Enzo Paleni received the most competitive rider award after helping animate the stage.
