A late catch of Alessia Vigilia set up the sprint on High Street in Willunga.

Ally Wollaston won the opening stage of the women’s Tour Down Under in Willunga and took the ochre leader’s jersey. The FDJ United-SUEZ rider finished a day on which her teammates worked to bring back a long solo breakaway.
Alessia Vigilia spent more than 90 kilometres ahead of the field and was caught only 300 metres from the finish. Her effort earned the mountains jersey, while Wollaston also led the sprint classification after securing the stage victory.
The 137.4-kilometre route was the longest stage in the race’s history. All fourteen women’s WorldTeams participated for the first time, and Justyna Czapla emerged as the best young rider as the event began its three-stage programme.
