Zverev halts Tien to reach fourth Melbourne semifinal
The third seed’s serving helped decide a demanding four-set quarterfinal.
Source publication date:
Alexander Zverev defeated Learner Tien 6–3, 6–7(5), 6–1, 7–6(3) to reach his fourth Australian Open semifinal. The German also advanced to his tenth major semifinal, ending the twenty-year-old American’s best Grand Slam campaign after three hours and thirteen minutes.
Zverev produced fifty-six winners, including twenty-four aces, and praised Tien’s exceptional baseline play. After losing a sixty-six-minute second set, he regained control in the third without committing an unforced error, while Tien failed to win a point behind second serve.
Tien still created a set point in the fourth, but Zverev saved it with a powerful serve and controlled the closing tiebreak. The result preserved the third seed’s strong record against left-handers and set up a semifinal against Carlos Alcaraz or Alex de Minaur.
