Ami Ishii wins Asian Games women’s 68kg wrestling gold
Japan’s wrestler beat Pak Sol Gum 7-2 on the opening day in Nagoya.
Ami Ishii won the women’s 68kg wrestling title at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games on 30 September. She defeated DPR Korea’s Pak Sol Gum 7-2 at Inae Sports Park, giving Japan a gold medal on the opening day of wrestling.
Ishii scored three takedowns across the final and led 5-1 after the first period. Pak’s takedown came from a counter, but Ishii maintained control of the score and completed the victory.
Her path to the final required a comeback against China’s Long Jia. Ishii trailed 4-0, moved ahead 8-4 and then won by fall with less than a minute remaining. Long subsequently claimed bronze with a 7-6 win over Mongolia’s Delgermaa Enkhsaikhan.
Kyrgyzstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova took the other bronze by pinning Korea’s Park Hyeonyeong. Ishii’s Games title was at 68kg; her 2024 world championship was at 72kg. Further wrestling events remained scheduled beyond this completed final.
