McEvoy sets World Cup record on Baku’s opening night

The Silk Road Tour began with a sprint record, two Asian records and Irish silver medals.

Cameron McEvoy opened the 2026 Swimming World Cup in Baku with a competition record of 20.22 seconds in the men’s 50m freestyle. Egor Kornev followed in 20.26 and Sean Niewold took bronze in 20.82, giving the first stop of the Silk Road Tour a closely contested sprint final.

Katarzyna Wasick won the women’s 50m freestyle in 23.40. Siobhan Haughey’s 23.48 silver-medal swim set an Asian record, while Yu Yiting established another Asian mark with 56.99 for bronze in the women’s 100m individual medley. Marrit Steenbergen won that race in 56.83, a hundredth ahead of Roos Vanotterdijk.

Ireland also collected two silvers. Mona McSharry swam 2:18.45 in the 200m breaststroke behind Evgeniia Chikunova’s 2:17.20. Ellen Walshe finished the 200m butterfly in 2:05.58, with Chang Mohan winning in 2:04.15 and Zhou Xinyang taking bronze in 2:05.65. Swim Ireland reported that McSharry was just 0.18 seconds outside her national record.

Baku’s meet continues through 3 October. The circuit then moves to Tashkent on 8–10 October and Astana on 15–17 October. Opening-night medals and records are confirmed; subsequent sessions remain separate competitive developments.
