Djokovic reaches 100 Australian Open wins
A straight-sets opening victory brought several appearance milestones for the ten-time champion.
Source publication date:
Novak Djokovic recorded his hundredth Australian Open match victory by defeating Pedro Martínez 6–3, 6–2, 6–2 in the first round. The ten-time champion required roughly two hours at Rod Laver Arena and never allowed the Spaniard a break-point opportunity.
Djokovic produced forty-nine winners and won sixty-four per cent of points on Martínez’s second serve. His efficient start contrasted with his opening matches in the previous two editions, both of which had required four sets against younger opponents.
The Serbian also equalled Roger Federer’s record of twenty-one Australian Open singles appearances. His eighty-first major singles appearance matched Federer and Feliciano López. Italian qualifier Francesco Maestrelli emerged as his next opponent after beating Terence Atmane in five sets.
